Rules For The Card Game, Spades

PLAYERS: Four, in two partnerships. (For two-hand version, see below.)

CARDS: The pack of 52. The cards rank A (high), K, and so on. Spades are always trumps.

THE DEAL: Each player gets thirteen cards, dealt one by one.

BIDDING: Beginning with the dealer, each player successively bids the number of tricks he anticipates to win, out of the total possible of thirteen. His bid, and his partner’s, establishes the contract of the partnership. The total doesn’t have to equal thirteen tricks.

A player could choose to bid Nil, signaling the intention not to win any tricks. After a player has bid Nil, he puts down three cards from his hand, face down, in the center of the table. If his partner has already bid, his partner then passes him three cards from his hand and picks up the three discards; otherwise, partner should wait until after he has bid to exchange.

Prior to looking at his hand, a player may bid Double Nil, thereby doubling up bonuses or penalties, and substitute three cards with his partner as in bidding Nil. If both partners bid Nil (or Double Nil), there is no exchange.

THE PLAY: Eldest hand heads first and may lead whatever suit aside from spades, which may not be led till the suit has been “broken” by a spade discard on a previous trick (unless the player has no other suit to lead). Players should follow suit when possible. A trick is won by the highest trump or by the highest card of the suit led. Every trick is kept by the player winning it.

SCORING: The object of the game is to accomplish the contract bid by the partnership. When one partner has bid Nil, his contract and his partner’s are scored individually, and then the scores are combined.

Tricks count 10 points each for a partnership when the contract is made, 10 against if it is set. (Minus scores are possible.) Tricks won in surplus of the contract count 1 each. A bid of Nil scores a bonus of 100 points if made or a penalty of that quantity if set Double Nil scores 200 points bonus or penalty.

When both partners bid Nil (or Double Nil) the partnership receives 200 points if both attain their contracts, but there is no score if either or both are set.

GAME comprises of 500 points. If both sides go over 500 points in the same hand, the side with the larger total score is the winner.

Spades for Two

There is no deal. The cards are shuffled and cut and set face down in the center of the table to form the stock. One player gets the top card from the stock. (Turn to start interchanges between the players.) If he prefers to keep it, he then looks at the second card of the stock and puts it face down to start the discard pile; if not, he discards his first card prior to looking at the second, and then draws and keeps the second card. Both players in turn discard one card and hold on to one card in this manner till the whole stock has been depleted, at which point each would have a hand of thirteen cards. The discard is then put aside and not used in subsequent play.

Double Nil should be bid before a player has drawn any cards. In all other respects, bidding, play, and scoring are as in Spades.

Toxic items are chlorine, fire extinguishers,spillable batteries except those in wheelchairs, compressed gas cylinders, liquid bleach, spray paint and tear gas.

As long as you know the prohibited and banned items in boarding a plane, the consequences of violating air travel rules are minimal. Battleship is a classic two player game where players try to sink their opponent’s navy ships. Most Battleship games come with two self contained storage units or “game boards.” The game also includes five ships and multiple hit and miss pegs. Set up is quick and game play doesn’t take too long. Battleship is an easy game for all ages.

The basic object of the game of Battleship is to hide your five ship fleet somewhere on your ocean and by calling out basic coordinates, find your opponent’s fleet before they find yours. Battleship is an old favorite Navy Game and is great for passing a few extra minutes and is perfect as a travel game.

Object of Battleship:
To become the winner of Battleship you must be able to find (sink) all five ships in your opponent’s fleet before they sink yours.

Contents of Battleship:
Two Battleship target/ocean grid containers, two carriers, two battleships, two cruisers, two submarines, and two destroyers. Battleship also comes with 84 white “miss” pegs, 42 red “hit” pegs and the official Battleship rules and instructions.

Game Preparation:
The easiest way to set up the game of Battleship is to sit facing your opponent with each target/ocean field facing away from each other. You should not be able to see your opponent’s hidden fleet. The Battleship rules state that each player should hide all five ships secretly somewhere on their ocean. Each ship has two anchoring pegs that must be pushed through the holes on the ocean grid. All holes on the ships must align over the holes of the ocean board. It is against the rules to place any ship diagonally on your ocean. Once all ships have been placed and each player announces that they are ready, the game of Battleship begins. Changing the position of your ships during the game is also against the rules.

Game Play:
The basic Battleship rules and instructions for playing the game are each player calls out one shot (or coordinate) each turn in attempt to hit one of their opponent’s ships. To “hit” one of your opponent’s ships, you must call out a letter and a number of where you think one of their ships is located. The instructions state that once a shot is called, the opponent must immediately call out “hit” or “miss.” If one of your ships gets hit, place a red peg over the hole location on your ships that was called out. If calling a shot (or trying to hit your opponent’s ships), mark a red peg (if a hit was made) or a white peg (a miss) on your target grid located on the lid or the vertical divider between you and your opponent. This will help you keep track of your hits and misses in your hunt to find their ships.

Once all holes on a ship have been filled with red pegs, your ship has sunk and must be removed from the ocean. You then announce which ship has sunk. The Battleship rules on successfully sinking a ship are as follows: Carrier – 5 hits, Battleship – 4 hits, Cruiser – 3 hits, Submarine – 3 hits, Destroyer – 2 hits. It is considered cheating and against the Battleship rules to be dishonest on the location of your ships.

Different Battleship rules and instructions are available or can be made before player. One popular version of Battleship is called Salvo.

Salvo Rules: Most Battleship rules apply but with few variations: Each player calls out five shots at a time. Once all five shots have been fired, the opponent then announces where and on what ships the hits were made (if any). This rules change, however, when a ship has been sunken by eliminating one shot in your turn for every ship you sink.

Advanced Salvo Rules: After all shots have been fired, the opponent only announces the number of hits that were made. They do not announce on which ship the hit was made or where it was hit. Keeping track of where you think your hits are can be a bit tricky and might be advisable to have a piece of paper near by.
