DIY Conservatories

So, you want to buy a conservatory, but you’re on a budget. You don’t want to sacrifice quality: if you’re going to end up with a conservatory you don’t want, you might as well not waste your money. Where you can save money is by erecting the conservatory yourself. From “Changing Rooms” and “Home Improvement” all the way through to the more grandiose plans of “Grand Designs”, there’s been something of a DIY revolution over the past 20 years. We’re all busy putting up shelves and curtain poles, so why should a conservatory bother you?

First of all, rest assured that doing it yourself doesn’t mean sacrificing choice. DIY conservatories come in all shapes and sizes, and most popular designs are available for home construction. These include the lean to designs popular for use with bungalows, as well as more traditional Victorian and Edwardian designs. DIY conservatories also offer the opportunity for you to design your own style of conservatory. Maybe you need something slightly smaller than the standard design, or a conservatory twice the size of any on the market.

You can adapt your design so you have a conservatory that maximises your available space. Many suppliers offer DIY conservatories with wall panels and skylights which can be built up around existing flooring. It also removes one of the trickiest parts of conservatory construction; digging the foundations and pouring concrete. A note of caution. You might be the world’s most confident DIY enthusiast, but before you go charging into the conservatory construction business, take a step back and ask yourself objectively, “Have I got the necessary experience?” We’ve joked about it, but it’s important to remember that building a conservatory is a construction job like any other and shouldn’t be taken on lightly.

Even if you have plenty of experience in similar minor construction jobs (e.g. erecting a garden shed, porch or treehouse), sit down and run through everything that you might need to know for the job. Do you know how to dig foundations? If you’re planning to add certain amenities, do you have the necessary experience and qualifications? Have you ever plumbed in a water supply before? Are you familiar with wiring? Remember, it is illegal for unqualified personnel to go messing about with gas supplies. If you do have the experience and are confident in your own abilities, then don’t let me stop you.

If, however, you realise your skills are lacking, then there is no shame in calling in a professional builder, electrician, glazier, etc. You can always order your dream DIY conservatory and then have a builder you are familiar with build it. That way, you will still make a saving on the astronomical costs of getting one firm to supply and build it. You might alternatively get help in for specific parts of the job. You might have all the necessary experience to erect DIY conservatories and fit blinds, flooring, etc, but get a spark in to do the electrics. The best suppliers will be able to give you additional advice during constructions, but its best to make sure they offer this service before you order from them.

It’s also worth noting that even the most confident of builders will need a couple of friends along to help with stages of construction. You can’t lift and fit an entire conservatory on your own.

Once it’s done, you can sit back and enjoy your custom-designed conservatory. And how much better will it feel knowing you built it with your own bare hands (or, at least, slightly fuller pocket)?

DIY Plumbing

Plumbing accidents seem to occur at the most inopportune times. No matter when it happens, however, a plumber should be immediately called, as any delay may increase the risk for water damage. Until such time as the plumber can actually arrive, however, a temporary repair can be accomplished.

Once a water leak has been discovered, the water to the house should be cut off at the main cutoff valve. This will stop the flow of water entering the home through the leaky pipe, and more damage, whether to the already-stressed plumbing or the house itself, will not occur.

Once the water flow has been halted, the area around the leak should be cleaned, and most of the excess water should be mopped up. Failure to do so, and allowing the area to remain wet, can cause warping or misshaping of wood, and can actually lead to the formation of mold, which can be a serious health threat to family members.

Small leaks may be able to be fixed with ordinary electrical tape. This is just a temporary solution as any leak will require the inspection and service of a qualified plumber.

The pipe from which the leak originated should be dried first, so that the tape will stick more firmly. The tape should be applied, starting approximately 2″ away from the leak itself.

The tape should be wrapped over the leak and carried down the pipe until the tape is again approximately 2″ away from the leak. Once that is accomplished, several more layers of tape should be added, with the direction of the tape being changed each time the pipe is wrapped. This will serve to temporarily stop the leak.

Larger plumbing problems will likely need something more than electrical tape. In these incidences, a pipe clamp and piece of the inner tube from a bicycle tire, strategically placed can be used as a “stop-gap” (or “stop-leak”) measure until such time as the plumber can be called.

Above Ground Swimming Pools

Swimming pools are very popular these days, proving to be one of the best investments you can make for your home and your family.  If you live in an area that is known for a hot climate, a swimming pool can be an ideal way to cool off.  You can have friends over at your pool to have fun, or use it to teach your kids how to swim.  Although many people prefer an in ground pool, an above ground pool is just as good – if not better.

Above ground swimming pools are well known for three reasons – safety, installation, and maintenance.  All types of swimming pools can be a chore to maintain, as you have to clean it on a daily basis and ensure that you have the right balance of chemicals in the water.  You also have to keep an eye on the temperature as well, and keep objects such as leaves out of the water.

Above ground pools are easier to maintain for the simple reason of being above ground.  In ground pools are down low, meaning that debris can easily get into it, and animals such as dogs, cats, and even squirrels have easy access to it.  Above ground pools on the other hand are a bit higher up, and make it hard for animals and debris to gain access to the water.  Those of you who are looking for a pool that requires less maintenance – should look into an above ground swimming pool.

Above ground pools are also safer for children as well.  Children can easily fall into in ground pools, for the simple fact that they are low to the ground.  With an above ground pool, children have to climb a ladder before they can get in the water.  This can make it hard for children to gain access, which is exactly what you want.  If you have young children at your house, you can count on an above ground pool to provide a sense of security.

Unlike in ground pools, above ground swimming pools are much easier to install, as you can do it yourself.  You can choose a professional if you like, although above ground pools are so easy to install that anyone can do it.  With these types of pools, there is no digging up your yard or other dangers involved.  All you need to do is clean off an area of your property for the pool, then set everything up.  It normally takes just a few hours to set up your pool, which makes it a very time efficient way of having a swimming pool.

Above ground pools are also cost efficient as well.  Most above ground swimming pools cost nearly 1/4 the price of an in ground pool, making them affordable for even those who on a tight budget.  There are several sizes to choose from, from the smallest and cheapest to the largest.  Even if you get a large model, the prices are still very affordable.  This way, your entire family can have a pool to enjoy in the summer without going broke in the process.

With an above ground swimming pool, you can spend quality time with your family without leaving your home.  Even though there are responsibilities and maintenance involved with a swimming pool, its well worth it.  If you have been looking for a great swimming pool, you can rest assured that an above ground pool is well worth the time – and the money.

Question by Willy P Shady: what chemical in swimming pools make it dangerous to swim in lightning?
Is there a conductive chemical in swimming pools that make swimming during a lightning storm dangerous? Would swimming in pure water with no chemicals be safe in a lightning storm?

Thanks a bundle guys.

Since mankind decided that hot tubs would be fun we have had to face the challenge of keeping that water clear and safe. Chlorine and Bromine have been in use since almost day one. Both have their advantages. They kill everything. The down side is also that they kill everything. By that I mean that Chlorine and Bromine are both caustic chemicals. That is both how they function and what makes them less desirable. Not only do they kill germs and bacteria but they are harmful to your skin, hair, bathing suits, spa jets, pump impellers, pets and environment. With the heightened awareness of the environment and our own physical health, there has been a wide variety of alternatives to the old standards.

Minerals can be used to treat the spa water with less harmful effects. First, Copper can be used to treat your water and keeps stuff from growing in your water. It is a lot safer for your skin, hair and health, and won’t cause premature break down of your pump and jet components. Still, because it does a good job of killing things you need to use care when you empty your spa. Some areas have banned using copper to treat water because if it does end up in the water shed it will kill fish and algae.

Another popular choice is Silver and zinc. I would just recommend sticking with the liquid based versions. You should never use anything directly in the filter area of the spa because you do not want the risk of anything being sucked into the water pump.

Ozone can also be effective in water treatment. It works by exposing ultra violet light to air which forms an energetic oxidizer. It destroys algae, viruses and bacteria. Again you should know how to use your system properly. Avoid over exposure to ozone while using the spa. No ozone bubbles should be entering the spa during occupancy. Also you should not be able to smell ozone while you are in the spa.

One thing that a lot of spa owners forget about is checking your spa water pH. Maintaining the proper pH level can greatly improve the effectiveness of the water treatment. Spa water that is not properly balanced can cause irritation to eyes, and mucous membranes. Just because you keep a handle on your chemical treatment, do not get lazy about checking the pH.

Finally, circulation of the water. Stagnant water, especially warm stagnant water is a breeding ground for life. Regular circulation of the water for significant periods of time will reduce the need for chemicals and increases the effectiveness of the spas filtration. It is better overall for your spa pump to run for three to four hours at a time for two to three times per day as opposed to running for thirty minutes at a time ten times per day. If your spa only runs for thirty minutes it does no have enough time to properly filter all the spa water.

The bottom line is that yo want to be able to enjoy your spa for years to come. However like your car, regular maintenance can have a profound influence on that. If you maintain your car, change the oil, replace the filters, rotate the tires, you stand a much better choice of enjoying your vehicle with fewer unpleasant surprises. The same goes for your spa.

What is a Dental Spa?

A dental spa offers a pleasant and welcoming alternative to those who dread visiting their dentist. It combines dental services typically available in a dentist’s office with all the pampering treatments you would expect from a spa. The relaxing ambience is an excellent antidote to the stresses and nervousness usually associated with a dental visit.

Just like at your dentist’s office, dental treatments at the spa are supervised by a licensed dentist. Spa dentistry “yes, there is even a term for it!”is recognized by the International Medical Spa Association and the Day Spa Association; but not by the American Dental Association. However, the American Dental Association has spoken out in support of dental spas suggesting that they improve overall patient care.

While dental spas are a relatively new phenomenon, by 2005, as many as 5 percent of the American Dental Association’s members had identified themselves as “dental spas”. And the numbers are growing by the day.

What can I expect at a dental spa?

A dental spa may offer general dental services as well as cosmetic dentistry. So you can obtain basic dental services like checkups, cleanings and fillings as well as cosmetic dental procedures such as straightening, whitening, closing gaps between teeth and crowns.

At a dental spa, you can generally expect services that are tailored to meet your specific needs. Whether you are hoping to combine a day of relaxation with dental care, or wish to have your dental needs addressed within a short period, you can still combine that visit with a quick facial or shoulder and neck massage. Many dental spas will offer wholesome, light snacks, especially if you are there for a longer visit.

Some dental spas may go a step ahead and combine their services with those of a medical practice.

Other facilities at the spa

As for the spa treatments, here’s what you can expect:

* A clean, safe, calming and nurturing environment, private treatment rooms for each client receiving a personal service

* Professional spa products for which estheticians and therapists have received training in their use.

* Massages including Swedish, Lymph Drainage and Reflexology massages. Other types such as Shiatsu, Polarity, Sports, Deep tissue, and Deep muscle massages may be optional.

* One or more body treatments from among body packs and wraps, exfoliation, cellulite, body toning/contouring, waxing and homecare program would be available at any day spa. They may also offer services such as electrical impulse body toning, heat treatments, Ayurveda treatments, laser hair removal, electrolysis, hand and foot care, including manicure and pedicure.

* Cleansing facial and homecare program may be offered. But services such as medical facials, electrical toning, laser hair removal, electrolysis, cosmetics and make-up consultation may not be available in all spas.

* Aromatherapy, hydrotherapy or steam and sauna.

* Your dental spa may also offer nutritional counseling & weight management, a private trainer, Yoga, meditation and spa cuisine.

* Some may even offer a full service hair salon, scalp treatments and hair packs.

The Types of Maple Trees Used For Making Maple Syrup

If you live in a region where maple is abundant, creating homemade maple syrup is really simple. You have to boil the maple sap to approximately l/35th of its initial mass. Should you intend to retail what you have produced, there are some more steps to follow in order to achieve a consistent syrup concentration aside from straining it via a fine felt strainer. You would also need to grade the syrup, hot-pack them at temperatures of around 180°F. Several individuals do all these steps with syrup for household use, also. But they really do not need to.

The things needed for creating homemade maple syrup could be as simple as 2 or 3 spouts, a kettle and some huge tin cans. It can be as complex as an all-out sugarhouse having an evaporator, holding tank, finishing rig and so on up to twenty or thirty different bits of equipment. If you reach that point, you have an investment amounting to ,000 or ,000.

The very first thing you need for creating maple syrup is to be able to identify a sugar maple. There exist two other maples to differentiate a Sugar Maple from: one that you will discover in yards, and one that you will encounter in the woods. In yards, the other more common breed is the one imported from Europe known as the Norway maple. At first sight a Norway Maple and a Sugar Maple appear a great deal alike. Both have the familiar maple leaf, like the one that you see on the Canadian flag. The two are huge, bountiful trees. Only the leaf of the Norway looks as though it had been placed sideways through a clothes wringer; it is almost twice as broad as a sugar maple leaf, and a great deal larger altogether. On the bark, if you inspect closely, very fine, virtually diamond-shaped designs can be seen. Sugar maples do not have these marks.

Within the woods, the other more common breed is the red maple — also known as Swamp Maple and Soft Maple. During fall, it is really easy to tell apart one from a Sugar Maple — it is among of the first trees to change color, eventually transforming into a bright scarlet hue. A Sugar Maple would turn pink-yellow-orange many weeks later. In the summertime it is still pretty much easy to recognize them apart, since the borders of a sugar-maple leaf move in flowing curves, and the red maples have little saw-toothed leaves.

Tips On Lawn Mower Safety

Still, thousands of children are injured in yard-work-related injuries every year.

It only takes a moment for a child to dart into the path of a lawn mower. Myranda got her foot trapped underneath the blade of her father’s riding lawn mower when she was 2 years old. Spence lost part of his foot when he tripped in front of a riding lawn mower when he was 3. Both Myranda and Spence had to have a foot amputated and now use prostheses.

Myranda and Spence are among the many children Shriners Hospitals for Children treats each year who have lost fingers, toes and limbs as a result of power lawn mower accidents.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 84,000 injuries result from lawn mower accidents each year, and 8,800 of those injuries are to children under the age of 18. One out of every five lawn mower deaths involves a child.

According to a report published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine Web site, children between the ages of 15 and 19 have the highest rate of hospitalizations caused by lawn mower accidents, and the second-most-common result of these hospitalizations is toe amputation.

To prevent lawn mower injuries, follow these safety tips from Shriners Hospitals for Children and the CPSC:

• Do not allow passengers on a riding mower.

• Keep children out of the yard and indoors while mowing the lawn.

• Do not allow children under the age of 14 to operate a lawn mower.

• Always prepare your lawn for mowing. Check your lawn for items such as sticks, rocks, toys, etc. Make sure nothing is hidden in the grass.

• Handle fuel with care. Wipe up spills. Never fill the tank on a mower that is hot. Never smoke or use any kind of flame around gasoline.

• Wear appropriate clothing and shoes, including long pants, long-sleeved shirts, eye protection, heavy gloves, and sturdy, close-toed shoes with slip-resistant rubber soles.

• Check guards and shields. Read the owner’s manual and know how to operate the equipment. Don’t remove or disable guards or other safety devices.

• Always use a mower with an automatic blade cutoff. Stay behind the handle until the blade stops.

• Never reach under a mower while it is still operating. If you need to remove debris or check the blade, disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

• Don’t cut grass when it’s wet.

• On slopes, mow up and down rather than across the slope.

Visit us today at: www.StartALawnCareBusiness.com Today, I am going to review the RedMax EBZ8001 Commercial backpack blower. My brand new 8001 arrived well boxed in sturdy corrugated packaging. Apart from the blower tubes, the unit itself was fully assembled. A standard wrench, a hex wrench, and a sparkplug wrench were included for quick assembly of the blower tubes and standard maintenance. With my order, the folks at RedMax were kind enough to include 6 bottles of 50:1 2 cycle oil. The first thing I noticed about the RedMax was its considerable heavy duty construction. Its size over normal consumer model backpack blowers is impressive. The RedMax 8001 is powered by an air cooled 2-cycle engine. The engine size is a massive 71.9cc’s capable of moving 915 cubic feet per minute at over 200 mph. It has a digital ignition for easy start and uninterrupted operation. I was very impressed with the construction of the air filter chamber. Poor air filter design shortens the life of many consumer model blowers. The RedMax 8001 relies on a 2 stage air filter. The first stage is a foam filter. This is a dry filter and RedMax does not recommend oiling the foam stage before use. The second stage is a paper filter. This filter system is vital to

How to Give Your Kitchen Cabinets a Facelift

Want your kitchen cabinets to look new and different without spending thousand of dollars for new ones. There are two ways you can approach this project. One is just to give your cabinets a good cleaning and change or clean the existing hardware. Second you can refinish the cabinets and change the hardware on them for a complete make over. I will discuss both methods in this how to project.

Material and Tools

Cleaning solution (to dissolve grease and dirt)

New cabinet handles and hinges (only if you are replacing hardware)

Electric Sander and sandpaper (if you are going to refinish cabinets)

If cabinets are stained:

Stain

Polyurethane (protective finish)

If Cabinets are painted:

Enamel paint for wood

Step1:

Remove all doors from cabinets and mark each one so you know where they came from. If you want to refinish your cabinets then proceed to Step-6

Step2:

If you are just going to clean the handles and hinges, remove all hardware from the doors and soak them for at least 30 minutes in grease dissolving cleaning solution. After about 30 minutes, scrub all hardware lightly with a soft brush and rinse.

Step3:

Clean all doors and cabinets with a grease dissolving cleaning solution. Repeat if necessary to remove all grease and dirt.

Step4:

If you are satisfied with the results, let everything dry and attach all the hardware back onto the cabinet doors.

Step5:

Attach all the cabinet doors back onto the cabinets.

Step6:

If you decide to refinish your cabinets and they are stained, you will need to strip the finish down to the wood with an electric sander. If you cabinets are painted they can be repainted after they are cleaned.

Step7:

Apply a new coat of enamel paint to the painted cabinets. For refinished cabinets apply a few coats of stain. Let stain dry overnight and then apply a few coats of polyurethane. Follow the manufacture instructions for applying the polyurethane. You may have to sand lightly between coats.

Step8:

Once everything is dry, install hardware back on the doors and install doors back onto the cabinets.
