Question by Kathleen: What does a lien on Carfax mean if the seller says he has the pink slip?
I’m thinking about buying a used car from a private seller. Carfax says there’s a lien on the car, but the seller’s ad says he’s holding the title. Is there some way to verify by looking at the pink slip if there’s a lien on the car? It seems that he wouldn’t have the pink slip unless he owned the car free and clear. Could it be that the info on Carfax is just a little old? He says he just leased a newer car.
The car is registered in California. How does it work here?

It varies from state to state. Some states, like Texas, withhold the clear title until the lien is paid off while some states issue a title to the owner but register a lien. If you purchase one in those states you must have the title and lien release paperwork from the bank to get the title transferred. The one sure way to find out is take the seller and his title to the DMV and see if they say it’s transferrable.

If any accident was reported to the police, then it goes on record to the DMV. CarFax pulls accident history from that. If the repairs were done well, the car should still hold value. Well I can tell you from a drivers point of view that they charge more for whats called Axles. Now truck charges are because they carry more weight then cars do and the government wants more because of the stress they put on bridges and roads.
